On December 17, 1969, Papua New Guinea witnessed history as its first two commercial pilots graduated from the South Pacific Aero Club in Port Moresby. Minson L. Peni from Djaul Island, New Ireland Province, and Aria Bouraga from Gabagaba Village, Central Province, shattered barriers and inspired countless young Papua New Guineans to dream of careers in aviation. Their success sent a powerful message: "Yes, we can do it!"
At a time when flying was seen as a "white man's profession," Minson and Aria proved otherwise, showing that Papua New Guineans, too, could master the skies. Minson L. Peni later became PNG’s first captain in December 1978, followed by Aria Bouraga in the early 1980s. Their achievements paved the way for generations of PNG pilots, some of whom continue to fly today, while others have since passed on.
For Captain Minson L. Peni, December holds special significance. Born on December 15, 1945, he graduated as PNG's first pilot on December 17, 1969, and achieved the rank of captain in December 1978.
The journey continued with the graduation of PNG's second batch of pilots on September 14, 1974, in Australia. This group included Captain Thomas Naklin Penisa from Yako Village, Sandaun Province, the late Captain Leo Glaglas from Lihir Island, New Ireland Province, and Captain Nickson Messet.
This remarkable legacy of PNG aviation is a testament to the courage, determination, and resilience of our people. A piece of history worth celebrating!
