Sitting in the quiet Goroka Airport terminal

Sitting in the quiet Goroka Airport terminal, waiting for my flight to Port Moresby, I’m overcome by a deep wave of nostalgia.

The silence here feels heavy, a far cry from the vibrant hustle of the 1970s and 1980s. Those were the glory days of Talair—when this airport was the beating heart of Papua New Guinea’s aviation. ✈️ Planes came and went in a constant rhythm, connecting Goroka to every corner of the country, from bustling towns to the most remote airstrips.

Back then, the air was electric with energy, progress, and a shared sense of purpose. Goroka thrived as a hub of activity and opportunity. But in 1993, when Talair closed its doors, it was as if the town’s lifeline was severed. The vibrant hum of life grew quiet, and Goroka has never quite recovered its former vitality.

I grew up here during those golden years, from 1975 to 1977, when Goroka was alive with promise and hope. The memories are vivid—bustling markets, friendly faces, and an airport that was always buzzing with life.

It wasn’t just Goroka that felt the loss. Papua New Guinea as a whole has also never quite recovered from the demise of Talair. It was more than an airline—it was a symbol of connectivity, growth, and opportunity for the entire nation.

Now, sitting in this silent terminal, it’s hard not to feel the loss. Yet, in these memories lies a dream of what Goroka and PNG once were—and what they could be again. šŸ’
