Minister for State Enterprises, Hon William Duma during a news conference yesterday (Tues 15th Aug 23) announced Airbus A220-100 and A220-300 as replacement aircraft for Air Niugini’s current Fokker fleet.
He said the decision has been approved by the National Executive Council, allowing Air Niugini now to proceed to the next phase of the project.
Referring to the new aircraft as the “People’s balus” , the minister said it is a game changer for the people of PNG.
“ The Airbus A220 can operate both domestic and international routes with more capacity. It burns 27 percent less fuel than the current fleet for the same sectors and has greater comfort and operating efficiency.”
“ This remarkable aircraft stands as the epitome of modern airliners in its category, specifically tailored for 100-150 seat segment. It boasts an impressive range of up to 6,400 kilometres, together with spacious cabin, seats and windows, passengers can enjoy high level of comfort during the flight.” Minister Duma said
Air Niugini’ Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr Gary Seddon said it’s a significant event in the history of Air Niugini and acknowledge the government, the airline board and everyone involved for their leadership and guidance.
He said “ It’s a momentous day in Air Niugini’s history. This is the first time for ANG to purchase brand new regional jets. We are moving from analogue to digital. The Fokker jet aircraft have done their part for the last 25 years and it’s time to replace them with a game changer aircraft.”
